I was on vacation when this vid came out T^T I caught a queen though semi claustral first time getting one o was late for nuptial flights
What did you feed them for protein? I have honey glazed crickets that has 20% protein only

You can train them buddy, my trichomyrmex destructor and the experimental fire ant colony is fully exposed to day light.

You can turn it off or lower the light level buddy, i usually film them in feeding time so I exposed them to light at least 5 mins before or after offering food.

Hello all ;) do you know what type of sand is used? Is it ok to use sand from rivers, put it in freezer 1st before using it? Thanks for all the videos and all the inspiration you are giving us <3
Yes you can buddy, I used sand for aquarium sometimes silica sand.

Where can you find grout powder?
Hardware stores usually carry them. Stores that mainly sell tiles have them 100% of the time.
@@morkyness water resistant ones wouldn't worl right
You can also search online buddy, don't use water resistant. If you can find sanded grout the better but normal one works too just add sand like we did on the vid for better water absorption.

My pheidole pallidula colony keeps escaping form their acrylic all in one gypsum nest. I have no idea where they are escaping from and i have to figure it out,as they have about 90-100 workers and every worker matters. They arent escaping in masses.only 2-3 at a time. But i gave to figure out where they are escaping from.😢😢
That's not good buddy, try to wait what path they take to get back you'll figure it out for sure.

Why do you add sand to the actual grout mixture??
I usually used sanded grout buddy as they had better water absorption, i haven't bought sanded grout yet so I mixed fine sand to the normal grout to make it absorb water well.

What kind of mortar can I use other than the mortar you used?
You can use plaster of Paris, or just normal concrete mix with Portland cement buddy.
After seeing ur video and ants Canada videos I got inspired to have my own ant farm.i caught a single carpenter ant queen 4 months ago now I am keeping them in a fish tank diy ant house. Love ur videos man keep it up.

Like what food buddy? I only feed feeder insects mostly, meat, fish and other stuff occasionally for protein. For carbohydrates I feed most of the time sugar water and honey, occasionally fruits.

What was your first ant you collected and also what was that ant species you showed first and second in the video
The first one was anochetus buddy, they look like mini trap jaws. The 2nd was carpenter ants in a founding cup with cocopeat substrate.

Also i have a question, Is putting different testubes together in one container (tubs and tubes) still as good as a formicarium? Or are there any other alternative for a formicarium for carpenter ants?

What escape prevention barrier do you use?
I mostly use PTFE fluon, and olive oil buddy.
Mr d colony will you open a shop to sell diy nests ? I would love to buy a nest from you because they are a masterpiece Edit: also when will we see ants living in the diy nests would love to see em live in your home made nest
Maybe one day buddy, it's my dream to be able to at least sell some for extra bucks. 😁 Maybe a month or two buddy we'll be moving colonies into them if all goes well.

Can't you just make it fully sand/dirt and let the ants figure out the layout?
But with that setup you won't have a clear view of the whine nest
You can do that but it depends if you want to be able to see into the nest and observe their behaviour. As he says in the video, the ants will always use the dirt to block the light, and your view, through the glass.
